Effie McCollum Jones Memorial Scholarship

AMOUNT OF AWARD: To be determined each year dependent upon the income produced by the permanent scholarship fund to be turned over to the Webster City Community School District by the trustees of these monies.  Only the income from these monies shall be utilized, with the total scholarship amount to be determined by the Board of Education, after a review of the investment income each year.  The awards can vary in amount as based on need, institution attended and overall costs for the schooling.

TYPE OF AWARD:
This memorial award is made in perpetuity on behalf of the St. Paul’s Universalist Church to honor the memory and service of Dr. Effie McCullum Jones, long time minister and worker within the church.

ELIGIBILITY:       
1.  Must be a current graduate of the Webster City High School and have been a class member for at least one year.
2.  Must be ranked in the top 50% of the class on a cumulative grade score complied through the end of the junior year.
3.  Must file an application form and all required data each year as set forth by the scholarship committee.
4.  Must carry a minimum of 12 semester hours or the equivalent for both semesters of work at the same institution.  Evidence of successful completion of work for the first semester must be supplied if so requested by the scholarship committee.

FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE SELECTION:
A.  That the student shall have been a conscientious student in their academic work and has performed at a high level consistent with his/her capability.
B.  That the student shall have given evidence of leadership in the various areas of his/her school involvement.
C.  That the person has displayed a high level of personal ethics, morals, and conduct during his/her high school career.
D.  That "amount of need" shall be given consideration but it is also understood that most students have some financial need if attending a college or university.
E.  Applicants may attend a community college or a four year college or university, leading toward the goal of a Bachelors’ Degree.

The WCHS Common Application is used for this scholarship.

On your resume be sure to include the following, if applicable: WCHS extracurricular activities, clubs and organizations you have been involved with during high school; community and/or other activities, clubs and organizations you have been involved with during high school; leadership roles you have held during high school; honors and/or awards you have received during high school; and any work experience you have had during high school.
In your letter to the scholarship committee, be sure to prove that you have paid attention to the criteria for that scholarship.  For example, if the scholarship requires you to go into a medical field, be sure that you write about your plans in that area.  Also, if the scholarship criteria includes specific characteristics like financial need or civic responsibility, make sure you talk about that in your letter as well.
